News Release - March 15, 2004
DUNCAN – The Canada-BC Infrastructure Program has announced funding of $874,666 towards construction of a multi-use artificial field hockey facility at the Cowichan Sportsplex which will be Vancouver Island’s finest said Chesterfield Sports Society President Jim Kocurek.
“These funds will be added to the $440,000 “Project Turf” fund that has been raised locally to build a $1.3 million field hockey pitch here in the Cowichan Valley,” said Kocurek.
At a gala reception on Friday night Sportsplex supporters felt the shockwave as MLA Graham Bruce made this announcement and they realized that this would make their dream of having an artificial field a reality.
“The proposed water-based turf field is the best surface for the sport of field hockey,” said Gillian Braun Cowichan Field Hockey Representative and coach of BC’s provincial girls highschool champs for 2003. “It is a superior surface to the sand-based turf fields at Uvic and comparable to the Lower Mainland’s UBC and Crofton House surfaces. The artificial grass blades are shorter than the fields recently built at Uvic, which are perfect for soccer and football but too long for field hockey.”
“This will give our local players the competitive edge we need to become the epicenter of field hockey in Canada,” continued Braun. “We already supply the highest number of players per capita to provincial and national level teams so you can imagine what we will be able to do with our own training facility here at home.”
This new facility will elevate the Cowichan Sportsplex from a top quality local sports facility to a provincial and national level field hockey destination. The valley’s mild climate will attract year-round interest and the cost of lodging and reduced transportation issues for players to and from the field will make this a very attractive venue for tournaments and training camps that have historically been hosted in the lower mainland.
The field hockey facility is the third major phase of construction at the Sportsplex. In 2000 the finishing touches were put on the 8-lane rubberized track and field facility, construction of the Cowichan Valley’s only lacrosse box is now underway and future development includes three ball diamonds, two additional grass sports fields, playgrounds, nature area and a clubhouse.
The Chesterfield Sports Society, established in 1996, is committed to developing and managing the Cowichan Sportsplex, a 29-acre outdoor recreation facility for sports and other community events. Our goal is to provide healthy activities, build community pride, promote tourism and become a major economic generator in the region.

The Cowichan Sportsplex is once again the recipient of a very generous anonymous donation of $50,000. This anonymous benefactor has now contributed $250,000 bringing the “Project Turf” total to almost $438,000.
These funds will be used to construct an artificial field hockey facility at the Cowichan Sportsplex...a home pitch for the Cowichan Field Hockey Association, which has been the impetus behind the creation and growth of the “Project Turf” fund and the development of a very successful Junior program resulting in a high turn-out of provincial, national, international and olympic level players.
Other funds are being applied for through the Canada / BC Infrastructure Program for the balance of the $1.8 million project. Support of this application has been received from the Municipality of North Cowichan.
The $1.8 million project includes site preparation, drainage, lighting, fencing, driveway relocation, bleachers, covered player and officials benches, irrigation and of course the actual water-based artificial turf surface. Although the capital expenditure is substantial, the maintenance expenses will be very low and usage will be high especially during the winter months when grass fields are closed due to inclement weather. This facility will be enjoyed by field hockey, soccer, lacrosse and other sports.
