History of the Cowichan Sportsplex

Cowichan Sportsplex running group

  • 1989 - Cowichan School District determined that the only track facility in the district (Cowichan Senior Secondary) was unfit for competition and it was closed.
  • 1990 - Community concerns mount due to the lack of a facility.  In the year following, a task force is formed to research and prepare a development plan for a replacement track.
  • 1992 - Provincial government transfers the 29-acre site on Chesterfield Avenue to the District of North Cowichan under the condition that it is used for "recreational purposes".  The Chesterfield Facilities Board, representing local government, the School District and five sports groups is established to secure the site.
  • 1994 - Chesterfield Facilities Board initiates a public relations campaign to determine the level of support in the community.  In three weeks 2,300 people pledge over $200,000 in materials, services and financial donations.  Pledges for funding from 1991 BC Winter Games Legacy Fund $209,000, the Municipality of North Cowichan $200,000 and School District 79 $200,000 were also received.
  • 1996 - The Chesterfield Sports Society is formed and site preparation begins for Phase 1 (8-lane running track and multi-purpose infield).
  • 1997 - The infield is ready for public use in the spring and the track is covered with asphalt in September. Public and sporting group usage of the facility begins. Community joggers, walkers and athletes train daily on the track.  Soccer, field hockey, field lacrosse and flag football teams use the field for league play and practices.
  • 2001 - On November 1st, the project was re-named the Cowichan Sportsplex.
  • 2001 - Phase 1 (projected cost $1.6) of the project is now complete. Due to the generosity of local contractors and business, this project was completed at $500,000 below budget for a total cost of $1.1 million.
  • 2001 - Ceevac Track & Field Club hosts the first Cowichan Valley Track & Field Meet since the track at Cowichan Senior Secondary was closed in 1989.
  • 2005 - The Province of BC announced $2 million in funding to ready the site for the BC Senior Games in August 2005.  A further commitment of $3 million of matching funds was made for construction of an Athlete Training Centre for the 2008 North American Indigenous Games and the 2010 Winter Olympics.
  • 2005 -: First bookings for the lacrosse box. First official season was 2006.
  • 2005 -: The Sportsplex was a major venue for the BC Senior Games hosting both the opening and closing ceremonies and the inaugural games on our three softball diamonds.
  • 2005 -: John Ferreira Field (artificial turf) had its Grand Opening Celebrations.
  • 2006 - First Slo-Pitch Season.  Grand Opening April 21, 2006.
  • 2007 -: The Bev Lashman Playground has been installed by community installation.
  • 2008 – The Cowichan Sportsplex played a large role in hosting athletes for the North American Indigenous Games for Track and Field events and baseball.
  • 2008 - A new fundraising and sponsorship program is introduced.  The Medallion Sponsor Podium presents 3 Medallion Events and sponsor opportunities.

Future Development – Athletic centre, Act Now BC Senior’s Park and beautification of the Sportsplex are planned for the future.
